Spatial patterns in ant colonies.

چکیده
The origins of large-scale spatial patterns in biology have been an important source of theoretical speculation since the pioneering work by Turing (1952) on the chemical basis of morphogenesis. Knowing how these patterns emerge and their functional role is important to our understanding of the evolution of biocomplexity and the role played by self organization. However, so far, conclusive evidence for local activation-long-range inhibition mechanisms in real biological systems has been elusive. Here a well-defined experimental and theoretical analysis of the pattern formation dynamics exhibited by clustering behavior in ant colonies is presented. These experiments and a simple mathematical model show that these colonies do indeed use this type of mechanism. All microscopic variables have been measured and provide the first evidence, to our knowledge, for this type of self-organized behavior in complex biological systems, supporting early conjectures about its role in the organization of insect societies.

Mining Spatial Trends by a Colony of Cooperative Ant Agents
Large amounts of spatially referenced data have been aggregated in various application domains such as Geographic Information Systems (GIS), environmental studies, banking and retailing, which motivates the highly demanding field of spatial data mining. So far many optimization problems have been better solved inspired by the foraging behavior of ant colonies. In this paper we propose a novel a...
متن کاملPositive Interactions between Desert Granivores: Localized Facilitation of Harvester Ants by Kangaroo Rats
Facilitation, when one species enhances the environment or performance of another species, can be highly localized in space. While facilitation in plant communities has been intensely studied, the role of facilitation in shaping animal communities is less well understood. In the Chihuahuan Desert, both kangaroo rats and harvester ants depend on the abundant seeds of annual plants. Kangaroo rats...
متن کاملWeb Mining using Artificial Ant Colonies: A Survey
Web mining has been very crucial to any organization as it provides useful insights to business patterns. It helps the company to understand its customers better. As the web is growing in pace, so is its importance and hence it becomes all the more necessary to find useful patterns. Here in this paper, web mining using ant colony optimization has been reviewed with some of its experimental resu...
متن کاملSpatial and Temporal Dynamics of a Fungal Pathogen Promote Pattern Formation in a Tropical Agroecosystem
Recent studies have shown that the spatial pattern of nests of an arboreal ant, Azteca instabilis (Hymenoptera: Formicidae), in a tropical coffee agroecosystem may emerge through self-organization. The proposed self-organization process involves both local expansion and density-dependent mortality of the ant colonies. We explored a possible mechanism for the density-dependent mortality involvin...
متن کاملCoupled oscillators and activity waves in ant colonies
We investigated the phenomenon of activity cycles in ants, taking into account the spatial structure of colonies. In our study species, Leptothorax acervorum, there are two spatially segregated groups in the nest. We developed a model that considers the two groups as coupled oscillators which can produce synchronized activity. By investigating the e¡ects of noise on the model system we predicte...
